In the late 1980s, the idea of building the new Alexandria Bibliotheca on the same site where the old Library of Alexandria used to be, to commemorate the world's most famous library in the history of antiquities.
The construction of the library took a long period; it started in 1992, and in May 1995, the construction of the library's neighboring wall began, before it was officially opened in October 2002. The library contained 200,000 books, which were revised and increased afterward, and a special multimedia collection and electronic resources with more than 25,000 electronic magazines and about 20,000 e-books were created afterward.
It has joined the World Library Consortium, which includes 30 of the world's largest libraries such as the Library of Congress, and is considered the first digital library that follows modern technological systems in the dissemination of knowledge
The New Library of Alexandria is located in the Shatby area in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, opposite the complex of the theoretical faculties of the University of Alexandria, and its northern facade overlooks the Mediterranean Sea at the tongue of the chain, overlooking the magnificent view of the Eastern Harbor, and includes parking lots, one of which is reserved for senior visitors

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is open from Sunday to Thursday from 10 am: to 7 pm.
Friday from noon: to 7 pm.
Saturday from noon: to 4 pm.
Among the most important information about the New Library of Alexandria is that it was established to revitalize the ancient Library of Alexandria, which was the largest library in the world and on which the new library was built and inaugurated in 2002.
The library includes the Planetarium Center, in a distinctive circular shape for the library's architectural structure and for the dissemination of scientific culture, where exhibitions and workshops are held, as well as a museum for the history of natural sciences.

It has more than 118,000 members, and its services extend to students from 15 governorates through "Knowledge Ambassadors".
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has several rooms, including the Taha Hussein Library and a special library for the blind, where it is interested in providing modern technologies, audiobooks, and others. The library also provides content for teenagers to train them on the correct ways to read books and is open to ages 12 to 18 years old.
