Watermelon Valley was named so because of the spread of huge fossilized rocks in it that resemble "watermelons" in a wonderful artistic painting, These are rocks of different sizes and colors, with weights ranging from 20 to 100 kilograms, and their colors vary between crimson, green, brown and pink.
Their distinctive shapes have puzzled geologists, who have yet to discover why watermelon rocks are found next to each other in clusters. But the theory that was finally postulated was that they were formed as a result of the eruption of volcanoes that were active millions of years ago when calcium and carbonate crystallized with charged particles in underwater mud sediments, which formed these stone balls and appeared on the surface of the earth. The strangest thing is that the elements of these rocks are so hard that when they are exposed to rain, it does not affect them, no matter how intense it is, and some chemists consider them among the priceless precious stones.
Narratives and legends have been woven around this place, with some locals still believing that the rocks in the valley are real watermelons that have been fossilized for thousands of years. Despite the beauty of the area, it does not receive the attention of governorate officials and is not exploited for tourism as much as it deserves.
Watermelon Valley is one of the main programs when taking safaris in the Wadi El Rayyan Desert, north of Lake Qarun, and the Kom Oshim area, as visitors are keen to go there to take beautiful souvenir photos in this wonderful and distinctive area.
