Greco-Roman Museum

Greco-Roman Museum is the second oldest Museum in Egypt, and the first and largest museum specializing in Greco-Roman antiquities in the Mediterranean region. The idea of establishing it began in 1891 when Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Boit thought about allocating a place that contains the archaeological discoveries that were uncovered in Alexandria, which works to preserve its cultural history, especially after those discoveries were deposited in the Boulaq Museum in Cairo.

Also, The Greco-Roman Museum was built by the German engineer Dertisch and the Dutch engineer Leon Stenon in the style of Greek buildings

includes 6,000 different pieces, including 4,000 pieces that have never been displayed before, most notably the statue of Isis Varia, which is located separately in the outer lobby of the museum, which is one of the largest exhibits, weighing 22 tons.

has a large library that includes 12,400 rare books on Greek and Roman civilization, and Dr. Doaa Sabri, the director of the library, told Al-Sharq that the library "includes rare books for master's and doctoral researchers."

One of the oldest books in the library is "Maps of Africa," which dates back to 1510 AD, as well as an original edition of "Description of Egypt."

The Greek Museum building suffered significant damage that almost affected the safety of the pieces in it, and groundwater affected the building's foundations, as well as cracks in the walls, according to Dr. Mahmoud Mabrouk, who noted that the late architect Farouk al-Jahouri "developed modern methods to save the building, and added another floor with a glass design that fits the old foundations."

The Greco-Roman Museum was closed in 2005 to start the restoration project, and work actually began in 2009, but it was halted in 2011 due to the lack of the necessary financial funds, and work resumed in 2018, until it was fully completed and reopened two days ago
